Things worth knowing about "E553b"

E553b is an approved food additive (talc) used as an anti-caking agent, coating agent, and filler in food products. It is considered safe when used as intended within regulated limits.

What is E553b?

E553b is the European designation for talc (also known as hydrated magnesium silicate), a naturally occurring mineral substance approved for use as a food additive. Talc has been used across various industries for centuries and is one of the softest known minerals.

Uses in Food

As a food additive, E553b serves several technological functions:

  • Anti-caking agent: Prevents food particles from clumping together, for example in powdered products.
  • Coating agent: Applied to the surface of foods to protect them or improve their appearance.
  • Release agent: Prevents food from sticking to surfaces or to each other, such as in chewing gum or rice.
  • Filler / bulking agent: Adds volume without significantly contributing to nutritional value.

Typical applications include chewing gum, confectionery, rice products, certain cheese and meat products, and dietary supplements (as a tableting aid).

Origin and Composition

Talc is a naturally mined mineral that is purified and milled before use. Its chemical composition is hydrated magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2). For use in food and pharmaceuticals, it must meet strict purity standards, particularly regarding the absence of asbestos-containing minerals, which can naturally occur in some talc deposits.

Safety and Health Assessment

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated E553b and concluded that it is safe for use in food at the approved levels, subject to the following conditions:

  • The talc used must be free from asbestos and other harmful contaminants.
  • Dietary exposure through food is generally low.
  • Talc is poorly absorbed by the human digestive system and is largely excreted unchanged.

It is important to note that health concerns related to talc primarily refer to the inhalation of talc dust in occupational settings -- not to oral ingestion through food consumption.

Regulatory Status and Labelling

E553b is permitted in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives. Its use is restricted to specific food categories and maximum permitted levels. Foods containing E553b must declare it in the ingredient list either as E553b or as talc.
