Things worth knowing about "Hexyne"

Hexyne is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with a triple bond belonging to the alkyne group. It is used in chemistry and industry as a solvent and synthetic building block.

What is Hexyne?

Hexyne is an organic hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₆H₁₀. It belongs to the group of alkynes – compounds that contain at least one carbon-carbon triple bond (C≡C). Depending on the position of this triple bond within the six-carbon chain, different isomers can be distinguished: Hex-1-yne, Hex-2-yne, and Hex-3-yne.

Chemical Properties

Hexyne is a colorless, slightly volatile liquid at room temperature with a characteristic odor. Key physical and chemical properties include:

  • Molecular formula: C₆H₁₀
  • Molar mass: approx. 82.14 g/mol
  • Boiling point: between approx. 71 °C and 81 °C depending on isomer
  • Solubility: poorly soluble in water, well soluble in organic solvents
  • Flash point: low – highly flammable

Isomers of Hexyne

Hex-1-yne

Hex-1-yne has the triple bond at the first carbon atom of the chain. As a terminal alkyne, it is particularly reactive in organic synthesis and is frequently used as a starting material for more complex molecules.

Hex-2-yne

Hex-2-yne carries the triple bond between the second and third carbon atoms. It is used, among other applications, as a model compound in fundamental research.

Hex-3-yne

In Hex-3-yne, the triple bond is located symmetrically in the center of the chain (between C3 and C4). This isomer exhibits greater symmetry and is also utilized in chemical synthesis.

Uses and Applications

Hexyne compounds are used in various industrial and scientific fields:

  • Organic synthesis: Hexyne isomers serve as building blocks for the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and specialty chemicals.
  • Solvents: Due to their solvent properties, alkynes such as hexyne are occasionally used as solvents in laboratory processes.
  • Research: Hexyne is used as a reference and model substance in physical chemistry and spectroscopy.
  • Catalysis research: The selective hydrogenation of hexyne to hexene or hexane is a classic model system for studying hydrogenation catalysts.

Safety and Health Considerations

Hexyne is classified as a highly flammable liquid and must be stored and handled accordingly. Key safety guidelines include:

  • Hexyne vapors are heavier than air and can accumulate near the ground – creating an explosion risk near ignition sources.
  • Direct skin contact or inhalation of vapors can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
  • Prolonged or repeated exposure may have effects on the nervous system.
  • Appropriate protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles, fume hood) must be used when handling hexyne.

Distinction from Other Hexane Compounds

Hexyne should not be confused with hexane (C₆H₁₄, a saturated hydrocarbon with no double or triple bonds) or hexene (C₆H₁₂, containing one double bond). The triple bond in hexyne gives the compound significantly higher reactivity compared to the corresponding saturated or mono-unsaturated analogues.
