Things worth knowing about "Shingles"

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful skin disease caused by the varicella zoster virus that also causes chickenpox

.

After a person has had chickenpox, the varicella zoster virus remains in the nerve cells of the body and can be reactivated years later, leading to shingles. This reactivated form of the virus usually occurs in older people or people with a weakened immune system . The main characteristic of shingles is painful, blister-like rashes that usually appear on one side of the body along a nerve cord, often in the abdomen, chest or face. The reactivation of the varicella zoster virus occurs when the immune system is compromised by stress, age or disease-related weakening .Symptoms often begin with a tingling or burning sensation on the affected area of skin, followed by a characteristic rash. Other symptoms may include redness, blistering, itching and fever.

Treatment for shingles focuses on relieving symptoms through medication and preventing complications. There are also vaccinations that can help reduce the risk of shingles, especially in older people or those with a weak immune system. In this context, an iron deficiency can impair the immune system, as iron is essential for the production of red blood cells and for the function of the immune system. An iron deficiency often leads to a reduced ability of the body to fight infections. Lactoferrin, which is found both in breast milk and in food supplements, plays an important role in immune defence as an iron-binding protein . It not only has antioxidant properties, but also promotes the activity of immune cells.

In addition to treatment, the prevention of shingles is important. A balanced diet rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C and vitamin D) and ) and minerals such as zinc and iron can strengthen the immune system. Food supplements that contain lactoferrin, iron or vitamin C are particularly helpful for people with a weakened immune system or an iron deficiency
