Things worth knowing about "TBE vaccination how often"

The TBE vaccination requires a primary immunization of 3 doses plus regular booster shots. Learn how often the TBE vaccine is recommended and who should get it.

What is the TBE Vaccination?

The TBE vaccination (Tick-Borne Encephalitis vaccination) protects against a viral infection of the brain and meninges transmitted by tick bites. The disease can cause severe neurological damage. Vaccination is the most important preventive measure for people living in or visiting TBE risk areas.

Primary Immunization: How Many Doses Are Needed?

The primary immunization against TBE consists of 3 vaccine doses following a defined schedule:

  • 1st dose: At a freely chosen starting point (Day 0)
  • 2nd dose: 1 to 3 months after the first dose
  • 3rd dose: 5 to 12 months after the second dose

After completing the primary series, reliable protection against TBE is established. For individuals who need rapid protection (e.g., before travel), an accelerated schedule is available, where the first and second doses can be given just 14 days apart.

Booster Vaccinations: How Often Are They Needed?

After completing the primary series, regular booster doses are required to maintain protection:

  • First booster: 3 years after the third dose of the primary series
  • Further boosters: Every 3 to 5 years, depending on age

Booster Intervals by Age

  • Under 50 years: Booster recommended every 5 years
  • Over 50 years: Booster recommended every 3 years, as the immune response tends to be weaker with increasing age

Who Should Get the TBE Vaccine?

The TBE vaccine is recommended for all individuals living in or visiting TBE risk areas. This includes:

  • People spending time in forests, fields, or meadows in risk regions
  • Hikers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts
  • Forestry workers, farmers, and other occupational groups with increased tick exposure
  • Travelers to international TBE risk areas (e.g., Austria, Switzerland, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia)

For Children: From What Age?

The TBE vaccine is approved for use from the age of 1 year. A specific pediatric formulation is available for children and adolescents up to 15 years of age. From the age of 16, the adult dose is used. The vaccination schedule is the same as for adults.

Tolerability and Side Effects

The TBE vaccine is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site
  • Fatigue and general malaise
  • Mild fever, particularly in children
  • Headache and muscle aches

Severe allergic reactions are very rare. The vaccine should not be administered if there is a known allergy to any of its components.
