Things worth knowing about "Jelqing"
Jelqing is a manual exercise technique aimed at increasing penis length or girth. Its effectiveness is not scientifically proven and it carries notable health risks.
What Is Jelqing?
Jelqing is a manual technique in which repetitive, stroking movements along the penis are used in an attempt to permanently increase its length or girth. The term is thought to originate from Arabic-speaking cultures and describes an ancient practice that has gained renewed popularity through online forums and social media. The technique is primarily used by men who desire a larger penis, despite the absence of scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness.
How Is Jelqing Performed?
During jelqing, the penis is held in a semi-erect state. Using the thumb and index finger in a circular grip (often called the "OK grip"), pressure is applied at the base of the penis and slowly moved toward the glans. This motion is repeated in multiple sets over many sessions, often carried out over weeks or months. Proponents often recommend the use of lubricants or oils to minimize skin irritation.
Scientific Evidence and Effectiveness
There are no clinically recognized studies demonstrating that jelqing leads to any permanent increase in penis size. All claimed results are based solely on anecdotal online reports that have not been scientifically verified. Medical associations do not recognize jelqing as an effective or recommended method for penis enlargement.
Risks and Potential Side Effects
Jelqing is associated with a range of health risks that can vary from mild to serious:
- Skin irritation and abrasions caused by mechanical friction
- Bruising and hematomas within penile tissue
- Nerve damage, which may result in temporary or permanent numbness
- Erectile dysfunction as a consequence of tissue damage
- Peyronie's disease: formation of scar tissue (plaques) within the penile shaft, which can cause painful curvature of the penis
- Capillary ruptures and permanent vascular damage
Psychological Background
The desire for penis enlargement is often associated with a negative body image or a condition known as penile dysmorphia -- a form of body dysmorphic disorder in which individuals perceive their genitalia as too small, even when they fall within the medically normal range. Research shows that average penis size in adult men is considerably higher than many affected individuals believe.
Medical Alternatives
Men who are distressed by a subjectively perceived small penis are encouraged to seek medical advice. Medically accepted options include:
- Psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for body image concerns
- Sex therapy to improve sexual well-being and confidence
- Surgical procedures (e.g., suspensory ligament division or lipectomy) -- only in medically indicated cases and following thorough medical consultation
Self-administered techniques such as jelqing without medical supervision are explicitly not recommended by the medical community.
