What Is a Cryotherapy Chamber?
A cryotherapy chamber (also known as a cryochamber or cold chamber) is a specialized facility in which a person is exposed to temperatures between -110 °C and -140 °C for a brief period – typically 1 to 3 minutes. This procedure is referred to as whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) and is used in medicine, professional sports, and wellness settings for recovery and therapeutic purposes.
How It Works
Inside the cryotherapy chamber, the body is rapidly cooled using chilled air or vaporized liquid nitrogen. The extreme cold triggers the body to constrict blood vessels (vasoconstriction). Upon leaving the chamber, the vessels dilate again (vasodilation), which promotes circulation, boosts metabolism, and initiates anti-inflammatory and analgesic processes throughout the body.
Areas of Application
- Inflammatory conditions: Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis
- Pain management: Chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, muscle pain
- Sports medicine: Recovery after intense physical activity, delayed onset muscle soreness, sports injuries
- Dermatology: Psoriasis, atopic dermatitis
- Neurological conditions: Multiple sclerosis (for symptom relief)
- General well-being: Stress reduction, improved sleep, mood enhancement
What to Expect During a Session
Before entering the chamber, sensitive areas such as the mouth, nose, ears, hands, and feet are protected with gloves, socks, and a face mask. Sessions typically last 1 to 3 minutes. Gentle body movements during the session can help improve cold tolerance. After the session, light physical activity is recommended to stimulate circulation.
Effects and Scientific Evidence
Research indicates that whole-body cryotherapy can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and increase endorphin levels, contributing to pain relief. In sports medicine, accelerated muscle recovery following intense physical exertion has been documented. However, the evidence base varies depending on the condition being treated, and further well-controlled clinical studies are still needed.
Contraindications
Cryotherapy is not suitable for everyone. Key contraindications include:
- Severe cardiovascular conditions (e.g., heart failure, unstable angina)
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Cold allergy or cold urticaria
- Raynaud's phenomenon
- Pregnancy
- Open wounds or acute flares of severe skin conditions
A medical consultation and examination are always recommended before the first session.
Risks and Side Effects
When performed correctly, whole-body cryotherapy is considered safe. Possible side effects include temporary skin redness, mild tingling, or a feeling of numbness. Serious adverse events such as frostbite are very rare when proper protective equipment and protocols are followed.
