Cardiac neurosis is a psychological disorder in which those affected develop an exaggerated fear of heart disease or sudden cardiac arrest, even though there is no organic disease.

Fear of heart disease often leads to severe physical symptoms such as palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness, which are perceived as life-threatening by those affected. In many cases, these symptoms occur in stressful situations or at rest and intensify the anxiety, creating a vicious circle of anxiety and physical symptoms.

Cardiac neurosis is a form of somatoform disorder or anxiety disorder and often affects people who pay particular attention to physical signals or who have developed a strong fear of heart disease after a stressful experience (e.g. a real heart attack or the sudden cardiac death of a loved one). Somatoform disorders are accompanied by physical complaints that cannot be explained by an organic cause. Despite inconspicuous medical examinations and repeated medical reassurance, those affected cannot rid themselves of the idea that they have a heart condition.

Heart neurosis is usually treated with a combination of psychotherapy, relaxation techniques and, if necessary, medication. Cognitive behavioural therapy is particularly effective, as it helps to recognise and break negative thought patterns. Breathing and relaxation techniques such as meditation or progressive muscle relaxation can also help to control physical symptoms. In some cases, herbal sedatives such as valerian or passion flower as well as an adequate supply of magnesium and B vitamins can stabilise the nervous system and reduce stress.

Since cardiac neuroses are often associated with chronic stress, anxiety disorders or depression, holistic treatment is crucial to improve quality of life in the long term and reduce the excessive focus on heart symptoms.
