What is a Caesarean Section?
A caesarean section (also spelled cesarean section, commonly referred to as a C-section; medical term: Sectio caesarea) is an obstetric surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through incisions made in the abdomen and uterus, rather than through the birth canal. It is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world.
Types of Caesarean Section
There are two main categories:
- Planned (elective) caesarean section: Scheduled in advance, often due to known medical risk factors or at the request of the mother.
- Emergency caesarean section: Performed unexpectedly when life-threatening complications arise for the mother or baby during pregnancy or labour.
Indications (Reasons for a Caesarean Section)
A caesarean section may be performed for various medical reasons:
- Absolute indications (mandatory): Transverse lie of the baby, placenta praevia (placenta blocking the cervix), severe eclampsia, umbilical cord prolapse, acute fetal hypoxia (oxygen deprivation)
- Relative indications (after careful assessment): Pelvic disproportion, multiple pregnancies (e.g. triplets), previous multiple caesarean sections, maternal request
How the Procedure Works
The procedure is typically performed under regional anaesthesia (spinal or epidural), allowing the mother to remain awake during delivery. In emergency situations, general anaesthesia may be required. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic hairline (Pfannenstiel incision) and then opens the uterus to deliver the baby. The entire procedure generally takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Risks and Possible Complications
As with any surgical procedure, a caesarean section carries certain risks:
- Bleeding and wound infection
- Thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Injury to adjacent organs (bladder, bowel)
- Adhesions (scar tissue) in the abdominal cavity affecting future pregnancies
- Increased likelihood of repeat caesarean sections in subsequent pregnancies
- For the newborn: slightly elevated risk of breathing difficulties immediately after birth
Recovery and Aftercare
Following a caesarean section, a hospital stay of typically 3 to 5 days is standard. Full recovery may take several weeks. Rest, regular wound care, and avoiding heavy lifting are important in the first weeks after the operation. Breastfeeding is generally possible and encouraged after a caesarean section.
Caesarean Section vs. Vaginal Birth
Whether a caesarean section or a vaginal birth is preferable depends on individual medical circumstances. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that caesarean sections be performed only when medically indicated, as vaginal birth in uncomplicated pregnancies is associated with fewer risks for both mother and child.
