Plaque is a soft, sticky film of food debris, saliva and bacteria that accumulates on the teeth and along the gum line.
Plaque builds up continuously and is the main cause of numerous oral health problems such as caries, gum inflammation (gingivitis) and periodontitis.
.Plaque forms when bacteria in the mouth metabolise carbohydrates from food - especially sugar - and produce acids in the process. These acids attack the tooth enamel and can lead to tooth decay. If plaque is not removed regularly, it hardens into tartar due to the minerals in the saliva, which can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning at the dentist.
The accumulation of plaque can also lead to inflammation of the gums. Early stages such as gingivitis cause bleeding gums and swelling. If left untreated, the inflammation can develop into periodontitis, in which the periodontium, including the bone, is damaged. Gum pockets can form, providing ideal conditions for the growth of harmful bacteria.
Effective prevention of plaque requires thorough oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning the spaces between your teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes and using mouth rinses to help. Mouth rinses with antibacterial agents can help to reduce plaque bacteria and prevent inflammation.A healthy diet also plays an important role, as low-sugar meals reduce the risk of plaque formation. Regular visits to the dentist and professional dental cleanings are essential to remove tartar and stubborn plaque. Consistent care not only protects the teeth, but also the gums and periodontium from the harmful effects of plaque.
