The resulting peroxides and reactive breakdown products such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) are cytotoxic and can damage DNA, proteins, and additional lipids.

- Cardiovascular disease: Oxidized LDL particles, a direct product of lipid peroxidation, play a central role in the development of atherosclerosis.
- Neurodegenerative diseases: The brain is especially vulnerable to lipid peroxidation due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids. Reduced protection is associated with Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease.
- Cancer development: Reactive aldehydes generated by lipid peroxidation can form DNA adducts and exert mutagenic effects.
- Inflammatory conditions: Oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation amplify inflammatory processes throughout the body.
- Aging: Cumulative cellular damage from lipid peroxidation is considered a major driver of biological aging.
Diet and Lifestyle to Support Peroxidation Protection
An antioxidant-rich diet is the most important strategy to strengthen peroxidation defenses. Recommended dietary choices include:
