What Is Partial Remission?
Partial remission (also called partial response) describes a state in which the symptoms or measurable signs of a disease have decreased significantly, but have not disappeared entirely. The disease is still present, though at a reduced level of activity. The term is widely used in oncology, psychiatry, and the treatment of autoimmune conditions.
Partial Remission vs. Complete Remission
It is important to distinguish between partial and complete remission:
- Complete remission: All measurable signs and symptoms of the disease have disappeared. This does not necessarily mean a cure, as disease cells may still be present at undetectable levels.
- Partial remission: The disease has improved significantly -- for example, a tumor has shrunk by at least 30-50 % -- but detectable signs of the disease remain.
Partial Remission in Oncology
In cancer medicine, remission is assessed using standardized criteria, most commonly the RECIST criteria (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors). Partial remission is defined as at least a 30 % reduction in the total size of measurable tumors, without the appearance of new lesions.
- Partial remission is considered a treatment success, even though the goal is typically complete remission or cure.
- It can be achieved through chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapies.
- Following partial remission, treatment is often continued or adjusted to pursue complete remission.
Partial Remission in Mental Health
The concept of partial remission is also highly relevant in psychiatry, particularly in conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia:
- In depression, partial remission means that symptoms have improved substantially, but some residual symptoms -- such as sleep disturbances, low energy, or persistent worry -- are still present.
- Partial remission is associated with a higher risk of relapse compared to full remission, and typically requires continued or adjusted treatment.
Partial Remission in Autoimmune Diseases
In conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, or multiple sclerosis, partial remission describes a phase in which disease activity is markedly reduced but not completely absent. Laboratory markers such as CRP or ESR may remain mildly elevated.
Implications for Treatment
From a medical perspective, partial remission is a positive sign that therapy is working. However, it is not a treatment endpoint:
- Treatment is generally continued and monitored closely.
- Regular follow-up examinations are essential to track the course of the disease.
- The goal remains complete remission or, depending on the condition, long-term disease control.
