What Is Fever Measurement?
Fever measurement is a simple diagnostic procedure used to determine a person´s body temperature. It helps identify elevated body temperatures – known as fever – which are commonly a sign that the body is responding to an infection or inflammation. A temperature of 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) or above is generally classified as fever. Measurement can be performed at home or in a medical setting.
Methods of Fever Measurement
There are several methods for measuring body temperature, each varying in accuracy depending on the measurement site and the type of thermometer used.
Rectal Measurement
Rectal measurement is considered the most accurate method and is especially recommended for infants and young children. Normal values range from 36.5 °C to 37.5 °C (97.7 °F to 99.5 °F).
Axillary Measurement
Axillary measurement involves placing the thermometer in the armpit. This method is less precise; results are typically about 0.5 °C lower than rectal readings.
Oral Measurement
Oral measurement is taken under the tongue. It is suitable for adults and older children and provides reliable results when the mouth has not been exposed to hot or cold food or drink for at least 15 minutes before measurement.
Ear Measurement (Tympanic)
Infrared ear thermometers measure the heat radiation from the eardrum. This method is fast and convenient but may produce inaccurate readings if the thermometer is not properly positioned.
Forehead Measurement (Temporal)
Forehead thermometers measure the temperature of the temporal artery, either by contact or non-contact scanning. They are very practical but slightly less precise than rectal or oral methods.
Normal Body Temperature and Fever Definition
Normal body temperature in most adults ranges from 36.0 °C to 37.4 °C (96.8 °F to 99.3 °F), but may vary depending on the time of day, physical activity, and measurement method. Clinically, temperature ranges are classified as follows:
- Slightly elevated temperature (subfebrile): 37.5 °C – 37.9 °C
- Fever: 38.0 °C and above
- High fever: 39.0 °C and above
- Very high fever (hyperpyrexia): 41.0 °C and above – medical emergency
When Should Fever Be Measured?
Measuring body temperature is advisable when the following symptoms are present:
- General feeling of illness or fatigue
- Chills or sweating
- Hot, flushed skin
- Headache or body aches
- Suspected infection
Special Considerations in Children
In infants under three months of age, any temperature of 38.0 °C or higher should be evaluated by a doctor immediately, as the immune system is not yet fully developed. In young children, fever can occasionally trigger febrile seizures, which, while usually harmless, require prompt medical assessment.
Diagnostic Significance
Fever measurement is a key first step in the clinical evaluation of patients. Combined with other symptoms and examination findings, it helps healthcare providers narrow down possible causes such as infectious diseases (e.g., influenza, COVID-19, urinary tract infections), inflammatory conditions, or other medical disorders, and guides appropriate treatment decisions.
