Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a key role in energy metabolism.
Vitamin B2 belongs to the B vitamin group and helps the body to convert carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy. In addition, vitamin B2 is important for the function of enzymes involved in cellular respiration and energy production, as well as for the growth and regeneration of tissues, particularly the skin, mucous membranes and eyes.
In contrast to vitamin B12, which is mainly found in animal products and can easily lead to a deficiency in vegetarians and vegans, vitamin B2 is found in a wide variety of foods. It is abundant in dairy products, eggs, meat, green leafy vegetables, wholemeal products and fortified cereal products. This wide availability makes a deficiency of riboflavin relatively rare, although it can occur in people who have a severely restricted diet or suffer from certain conditions that affect nutrient absorption.
Vitamin B2 also contributes to the maintenance of a healthy nervous system and is essential for the production of red blood cells. A lack of riboflavin can lead to symptoms such as inflammation of the oral mucosa, cracks at the corners of the mouth, skin rashes, visual problems (e.g. light-sensitive eyes) and general fatigue. As vitamin B2 is water-soluble, it can be easily excreted from the body, so regular intake through food is necessary.
To summarise, vitamin B2 is essential for energy production, cell metabolism and general well-being. It supports the nervous system, skin health and eye health. A balanced diet generally ensures that enough riboflavin is consumed to cover the daily requirement.
