How Does the Venous Pressure Test Work?

When is the Venous Pressure Test Used?

- Follow-up after venous procedures (e.g., sclerotherapy or stripping)

What Do the Results Mean?
Under normal conditions, venous pressure drops significantly during physical activity (due to the muscle pump effect) and rises again slowly once activity stops. In cases of venous valve incompetence or venous reflux, the pressure drop is minimal, or the pressure rises again too quickly -- both indicating impaired venous valve function.
- Normal venous pressure at rest (lying down): approximately 10–15 mmHg
- Normal venous pressure while standing: up to 80–100 mmHg (hydrostatic pressure)
- Pressure drop during exercise: Healthy veins show a significant pressure reduction of at least 50% during activity.
Diagnosis and Clinical Significance
The venous pressure test provides important information for diagnosing and planning treatment of venous conditions. It allows an objective assessment of the severity of venous insufficiency and helps determine the most suitable treatment -- ranging from conservative measures such as compression therapy to interventional or surgical procedures.
Risks and Side Effects
Non-invasive methods (LRR, PPG) are completely risk-free and painless. The invasive needle-based measurement may involve minor side effects:
- Brief pain or pressure at the puncture site
- Minor bleeding tendency
- Rarely: local inflammatory reaction
