Grape seed extract is particularly rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), a group of secondary plant substances with a strong antioxidant effect. This substance has attracted a great deal of attention in naturopathy and functional medicine in recent years, as it is said to have numerous health-promoting properties - particularly with regard to cell protection, skin health and vascular function.
The antioxidant capacity of OPC is said to help neutralise free radicals that can be caused by environmental factors such as UV radiation, stress or pollutants. There is also evidence that grape seed extract has an anti-inflammatory effect and improves microcirculation in the capillaries - which can be particularly relevant in cases of venous insufficiency or tired legs. The extract is also frequently used as a natural cell protector in the field of anti-ageing.Grape seed extract is usually taken orally in the form of capsules or powders. The dosage varies depending on the product and the intended benefit; typical daily doses are between 100 and 300 mg of OPC.
