Uridine monophosphate (UMP), also known as uridine-5-monophosphate, is a nucleotide – a fundamental building block of ribonucleic acid (RNA). It consists of the nucleobase uracil, the sugar ribose, and a phosphate group. UMP is present in virtually all living cells and serves as a central molecule in the pyrimidine metabolism of the human body.
Biological Functions
Uridine monophosphate fulfills a wide range of biochemical roles in the human body:
- RNA synthesis: UMP is a direct precursor for the production of RNA, which is essential for protein synthesis.
- Cell membrane formation: UMP is converted in the body to uridine triphosphate (UTP) and further to CDP-choline, a key substrate for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine – an important component of neuronal cell membranes.

The most well-known application is the Souvenaid concept, in which UMP was combined with DHA and choline for patients with early-stage Alzheimer disease. Initial study results showed positive effects on memory performance; however, the overall level of evidence remains limited and further research is needed.
Safety and Tolerability
UMP is generally considered well tolerated when taken orally in typical amounts. No serious adverse effects have been documented to date.
