Ureaplasma are tiny bacteria belonging to the family Mycoplasmataceae and may naturally colonize the urogenital tract of both men and women.
The most common species are Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum. They are considered opportunistic pathogens: many people carry them without symptoms, but under certain conditions they can cause infections.
Infections may manifest as painful urination, discharge, pelvic pain, or prostate discomfort. In women, Ureaplasma has been linked to miscarriages, preterm births, and infertility, while in men, it can cause urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). However, some of these associations remain scientifically debated.
Diagnosis is made through swab or urine PCR testing. Treatment usually involves antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin. Because infections often remain asymptomatic, it is important that sexual partners are also treated to avoid reinfections. Preventive strategies include safer sex practices and regular screenings for at-risk individuals.
