Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata), is a plant resin extracted from the tree of the same name.

Boswellia has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine to treat inflammatory diseases, pain and chronic complaints. The active ingredients, known as boswellic acids, have strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pain-relieving properties and make boswellia a popular natural remedy for arthritis, rheumatism, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Boswellic acids specifically inhibit the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), which is involved in the formation of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes - in contrast to conventional anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs, which often affect the COX enzymes. As a result, boswellia has a particularly gentle effect on the gastrointestinal tract and is well tolerated in the long term. Studies show a significant improvement in pain intensity, mobility and quality of life in cases of joint inflammation, as well as a reduction in inflammatory processes in the intestine.

Boswellia is usually taken in the form of capsules or tablets with standardised extracts - ideally with a content of at least 65% boswellic acids. It can be combined well with other natural substances such as turmeric, ginger or omega-3 fatty acids. Several weeks of intake are often required for a noticeable effect. In rare cases, mild side effects such as nausea or skin reactions may occur.
