Blood sugar refers to the amount of glucose that circulates in the blood and serves as the body's main source of energy.
Blood sugar levels are regulated by the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. A stable blood sugar level is crucial for health, as both excessively high (hyperglycaemia) and excessively low levels (hypoglycaemia) can have serious consequences for the body.
A healthy blood sugar level is normally between 70 and 100 mg/dl on an empty stomach. After eating, it can rise briefly, but should return to the normal range due to the effect of insulin. If the blood sugar level remains permanently high, this is known as diabetes mellitus. This chronic metabolic disease occurs either due to a lack of insulin (type 1 diabetes) or insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes). In the long term, uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage (neuropathy) and eye problems.
A stable blood sugar level is not only important for diabetics, but also for people without a diagnosed condition. Severe fluctuations, which can be triggered by a high-sugar diet, stress or lack of exercise, put a strain on the body and lead to symptoms such as tiredness, concentration problems and food cravings. Unstable blood sugar levels can also impair insulin sensitivity in the long term and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
A balanced diet is crucial for stabilising blood sugar levels. Complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal products, pulses and vegetables ensure a slow rise in blood sugar, while simple sugars should be avoided. Protein and healthy fats also help to avoid sharp fluctuations. Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity and helps to transport excess glucose from the blood into the muscles.
Food supplements such as alpha lipoic acid (ALA) can also have a supportive effect. ALA improves insulin sensitivity and promotes the uptake of glucose into the cells, which can lower blood sugar levels. This makes it particularly valuable for people with insulin resistance or diabetes. At the same time, ALA's antioxidant properties protect against the cell damage caused by high blood sugar levels.
Regular monitoring of blood sugar, an active lifestyle and conscious dietary choices are essential to keep blood sugar levels in a healthy range and minimise the risk of long-term health problems.
