Erythropoietin (EPO)

Diagnosis and Laboratory Testing
Bone marrow stimulation markers are typically measured from a venous blood sample. Common investigations include:
- Complete blood count (CBC): Measurement of erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes, and reticulocytes.
- Serum levels of EPO, G-CSF, and TPO: Determined by immunoassay (ELISA).
- Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy: For unclear findings, to directly assess bone marrow cellularity and stem cell populations.
- Flow cytometry: Characterization of stem and progenitor cell populations (e.g., CD34+ cells) as a measure of bone marrow capacity.
Therapeutic Stimulation of the Bone Marrow
In modern medicine, bone marrow stimulation markers are used not only diagnostically but also to guide therapeutic interventions. Hematopoietic growth factors such as erythropoietin (EPO), G-CSF, or TPO receptor agonists (e.g., eltrombopag, romiplostim) are used specifically to stimulate the bone marrow and improve blood cell production.
