The MCHC value (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) indicates the average haemoglobin concentration in the red blood cells (erythrocytes).
Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein that is responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood. The MCHC value is given in grams per decilitre (g/dl) and is normally between A low MCHC value often occurs with iron deficiency anaemia, as a lack of iron reduces haemoglobin formation. Chronic inflammation or blood loss can also lead to a reduced haemoglobin concentration in the erythrocytes. Symptoms of a low MCHC value include fatigue, pallor, dizziness, concentration problems and shortness of breath. An iron infusion or a targeted diet with iron-rich foods such as red meat, pulses and green leafy vegetables can help to improve iron levels. Lactoferrin has also proven to be a natural alternative, as it optimises iron absorption in the intestine and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
An increased MCHC value is less common and often occurs in hereditary diseases such as spherocytosis, in which the erythrocytes have an altered shape and are broken down more quickly. Severe burns or certain autoimmune diseases can also lead to an increase in MCHC. In these cases, specific medical clarification is necessary.
In order to stabilise the haemoglobin concentration and thus the MCHC value, a balanced diet and an adequate supply of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid are essential. Antioxidants such as vitamin C support iron absorption and help to reduce oxidative stress, which can damage blood cells. Healthy intestinal flora also contributes to better nutrient utilisation, which is why probiotic foods and anti-inflammatory substances such as omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial.
Regular monitoring of the MCHC value as part of a blood count can help to detect signs of anaemia or other blood disorders at an early stage. Targeted nutrition and nutrient therapy can help to optimise haemoglobin levels and improve the oxygen supply in the body.
