D-mannose is a naturally occurring simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is closely related to glucose and is also found in small quantities in the human body and in fruits such as apples, cranberries, peaches and berries.
Unlike conventional sugar, D-mannose is hardly metabolised by the body, but is excreted almost unchanged in the urine via the kidneys - a property that makes it particularly valuable for bladder and urinary tract health. D-mannose is used in particular for recurring urinary tract infections (e.g. cystitis).
Its effect is based on a mechanical principle: many disease-causing E. coli bacteria, which cause over 80% of all bladder infections, attach themselves to the bladder mucosa via special fimbriae (hair structures). D-mannose can bind to these fimbriae and thus prevent the bacteria from attaching to the mucous membrane - the pathogens are flushed out with the urine. As a result, D-mannose can reduce recurrent infections without disrupting the natural intestinal flora - an advantage over antibiotics.
Since D-mannose does not interfere with the sugar metabolism, it hardly increases the blood sugar level and is also suitable for diabetics. It is usually taken as a powder or capsule; the combination with cranberry extract, probiotics or bearberry leaves has proved particularly effective. Side effects are rare and are usually due to very high dosages or individual intolerances.
