There are more than 80 known autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Before initiating autoimmune therapy, a comprehensive diagnostic workup is performed. The choice of therapy depends on the specific disease, its severity, the organs affected, and the patient's general health status.
Side Effects and Risks
Since most autoimmune therapies weaken the immune system, there is an increased risk of infection. Other potential side effects vary depending on the agent used and may include:
- Increased susceptibility to infections (bacterial, viral, fungal)

- Liver and kidney dysfunction
- Changes in blood count
