SIBO (small intestine overgrowth) causes flatulence, digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies. Find out more about the causes, symptoms and natural treatment options.
An estimated 11% of the world's population suffers from SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. Normally, the small intestine contains only a few bacteria, while most microorganisms are colonised in the large intestine. SIBO leads to an excessive proliferation of bacteria in the small intestine, which disrupts digestive processes and causes discomfort
.Causes of SIBO
Frequent causes are:
- Disturbed bowel movement (e.g. due to irritable bowel syndrome or diabetes)
- Reduced stomach acid production (often due to proton pump inhibitors)
- Chronic stress and malnutrition
- Intestinal surgery or anatomical changes
Symptoms of SIBO
The symptoms are often similar to irritable bowel syndrome and include:
- Flat belly, abdominal pain, bloating
- Chronic flatulence and diarrhoea or constipation
- Nutrient deficiencies (e.g. vitamin B12, iron)
- Fatigue, concentration problems and skin problems
Treatment and natural approaches
- Nutrition: Low-FODMAP diet or elemental diet to reduce bacterial food
- Antibacterial therapy: Antibiotics (Rifaxim.) or natural alternatives such as Oregano oil or berberine
- Promote bowel movement: prokinetics and intermittent fasting
- Regulate intestinal flora: Specific probiotics and micronutrients to support digestion
SIBO is a complex intestinal disease that requires individualised and holistic treatment. A combination of adapted nutrition, antimicrobial strategies and promotion of bowel movement can help to alleviate symptoms in the long term.
