What is Sebaceous Gland Secretion Analysis?

Sebum produced by the sebaceous glands serves several important functions for skin health:

How is the Analysis Performed?
Several methods are available for sebaceous gland secretion analysis:
Sebummetry
Sebummetry is a non-invasive measurement method in which special film materials or devices (known as sebameters) are applied to the skin. The absorbed sebum alters the light transmittance of the film, which can be measured and quantified. This method is primarily used to determine the amount of sebum produced.
Lipid Extraction and Chromatographic Analysis
For a detailed analysis of sebum composition, the secretion is collected using solvent extraction and subsequently examined by gas chromatography or mass spectrometry. These techniques allow for precise determination of individual lipid classes and fractions.
Tape-Stripping Method
In the tape-stripping method, adhesive strips are applied to the skin and then removed to collect skin cells and sebum. The obtained samples can then be subjected to biochemical and microbiological analysis.
Clinical Significance
Sebaceous gland secretion analysis provides valuable information for dermatologists and researchers. Elevated levels of certain fatty acids or oxidation products in sebum (e.g. oxidised squalene) have been linked to the development of acne.
