Haemoglobin is an iron-containing protein in the red blood cells that is responsible for the transport of oxygen in the body.
Haemoglobin binds oxygen in the lungs and transports it to the organs and tissues, where the oxygen is released to support the metabolism. At the same time, haemoglobin absorbs carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of metabolism, and returns it to the lungs where it is exhaled.
The haemoglobin level in the blood is a key indicator of health and is often used to diagnose anaemia, particularly iron deficiency anaemia. As iron is essential for the formation of haemoglobin, a lack of iron leads to a reduced ability to transport oxygen effectively around the body. Symptoms of low haemoglobin levels, such as tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath, are therefore typical of anaemia. In addition to iron deficiency, other factors such as chronic illnesses, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency and blood loss can also influence haemoglobin levels. Adequate iron intake through diet or supplements is therefore important to ensure healthy haemoglobin levels and maintain the body's oxygen supply.
