Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, wingless insects that prefer to feed on the blood of humans and are mainly found in beds, upholstered furniture, cracks and textiles
.Bed bugs are nocturnal and usually bite in the early hours of the morning. The bites lead to itchy, reddish wheals, which often occur in rows or groups and can sometimes cause allergic reactions or inflammation. As they hide well during the day, an infestation often remains undetected for a long time.
Bed bugs are usually transmitted directly via clothing, luggage, used furniture or overnight stays in hotels. They are widespread worldwide and have become more common again in recent years - even in industrialised countries. An infestation is characterised by small traces of faeces (black dots), traces of blood on the bed sheets, skinning residue and sometimes a sweet, spicy smell. A massive infestation can cause psychological stress and lead to sleep disorders.Combating bedbugs is difficult and usually requires professional pest control. Methods such as hot steam cleaning,cold shock, diatomaceous earth or insecticides are used. Regular washing of bed linen at ≥ 60 °C, thorough vacuuming cracks and mattresses, avoiding used furniture without checking and carefully checking luggage after travelling. Early detection is crucial to prevent the spread in the home.
