Lyme disease, also known as Lyme borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia, which is mainly transmitted by tick bites.

The most common form in Europe is the Borrelia burgdorferi infection. The first symptoms can be a ring-shaped reddening of the skin (erythema migrans), flu-like symptoms and joint pain. If left untreated, the disease can affect the nervous system, joints and heart. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical symptoms and specific blood tests. Early treatment with antibiotics can usually cure the disease well. To prevent infection, tick protection measures such as long clothing, insect sprays and the rapid removal of ticks after a bite are essential.
