Things worth knowing about "Arterial wall analysis"

Arterial wall analysis is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the structure and elasticity of artery walls. It helps detect cardiovascular risks at an early stage.

What is Arterial Wall Analysis?

Arterial wall analysis is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the condition of artery walls. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart throughout the body. As we age, or due to conditions such as arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), artery walls can lose their elasticity and undergo structural changes. Arterial wall analysis enables early detection of these changes, often before any clinical symptoms appear.

How Does Arterial Wall Analysis Work?

Depending on the method used, different parameters of the arterial wall are measured. The most common techniques include:

  • Pulse Wave Analysis (PWA): This measures the speed at which the pulse wave travels along the artery. An increased pulse wave velocity indicates reduced vessel wall elasticity.
  • Intima-Media Thickness (IMT): Using ultrasound, the thickness of the innermost layers of the artery wall (intima and media) is measured, primarily at the carotid artery in the neck. Increased thickness is an early sign of arteriosclerosis.
  • Augmentation Index (AIx): This parameter reflects how much reflected pulse waves add to the workload of the heart, providing information about arterial stiffness.
  • Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI): Blood pressure values at the arm and ankle are compared to detect circulatory disorders.

When is Arterial Wall Analysis Used?

Arterial wall analysis is primarily used for preventive diagnostics and cardiovascular risk assessment. Typical indications include:

  • Elevated cardiovascular risk (e.g., high blood pressure, diabetes, lipid disorders, or smoking)
  • Family history of heart attack or stroke
  • Monitoring treatment success in known arteriosclerosis
  • Preventive check-ups from middle age onward

How the Examination is Performed

Arterial wall analysis is painless and typically completed within a few minutes. Depending on the method, pressure sensors, ultrasound probes, or special blood pressure cuffs are placed at various points on the body. No special preparation is usually required, although caffeine and physical activity should be avoided before the measurement.

Interpreting the Results

The measured values are compared against age-appropriate normal ranges. Deviations may indicate increased arterial stiffness or early arteriosclerotic changes. These findings help physicians initiate personalized preventive or therapeutic measures, such as medication adjustments, lifestyle modifications, or more frequent follow-up examinations.

Importance for Health

Arteriosclerosis and arterial stiffness are major risk factors for heart attack and stroke – two of the most common causes of death worldwide. Early detection through arterial wall analysis provides the opportunity to take targeted action and reduce personal cardiovascular risk in the long term.
