Antihistamines are primarily used to treat allergies such as hay fever, hives or allergic asthma. Antihistamines are also used for nausea, sleep disorders and as a component of certain painkillers. A distinction is made between H1 antihistamines (against allergic reactions) and H2 antihistamines (to reduce stomach acid production).

An important but often overlooked aspect is the interaction of antihistamines with certain vitamins and minerals.
