Autism, often referred to as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects behaviour, communication and social interactions.
The term ""spectrum"" in the context of autism spectrum disorders emphasises that the manifestations and symptoms of autism can vary greatly. Some sufferers require intensive support, while others can live largely independently. Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, often between the ages of two and three. Core characteristics include difficulties in social interaction, restricted or repetitive behaviours and special interests or fixations. Children with autism often show delayed speech development, avoid eye contact or react unusually to sensory impressions such as sounds, light or touch.
The causes of autism are complex and not fully understood. It is assumed that a combination of genetic and environmental factors influence the development of the disorder. Certain genetic mutations and changes in brain development during pregnancy may play a role. Environmental factors, such as prenatal influences or complications at birth, are also being investigated. However, there is no scientific evidence that vaccines cause autism.
Therapy for autism aims to improve the quality of life of those affected, strengthen their communication skills and help them integrate into society. Approaches such as behavioural therapy (e.g. Applied Behaviour Analysis, ABA), speech therapy and occupational therapy are frequently used methods. Individualised education plans and support measures also play a key role. In some cases, medication can be used to treat accompanying symptoms such as anxiety, depression or hyperactivity.A crucial aspect of supporting people with autism is the understanding and acceptance of society. Many of those affected have exceptional abilities, such as a strong memory, analytical thinking skills or creativity. With the right support, these strengths can be utilised in a targeted manner. In recent years, research has also investigated alternative approaches that could improve the quality of life of people with autism. These include the use of substances such as lactoferrin, which has potential anti-inflammatory effects on the brain, or antioxidant substances such as astaxanthin, which could support the nervous system. However, these approaches are still the subject of further studies and should only be pursued in consultation with specialists.Autism is not a disease in the conventional sense, but a neurological variety based on specific differences in brain structure and function. Through early diagnosis, individualised support and social inclusion, people with autism can lead a fulfilled and self-determined life.
