Brain fog describes mental exhaustion and concentration problems. Find out what lies behind it.
The term brain fog - often referred to as "brain fog" or "weak thinking" - describes a state of mental exhaustion in which thinking, concentration and remembering are difficult. Those affected report a dull, slow feeling in their head, reduced mental performance, difficulty finding words, fatigue and a general inner fog. Brain fog is not an independent diagnosis, but a non-specific symptom that can occur in many contexts - both physically and mentally.
Common causes of brain fog are chronic stresslack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, an unbalanced diet, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory processes in the body or disorders in the gut-brain system. Nutrient deficiencies - such as vitamin B12, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids or iron - can also play a role. Brain fog also frequently occurs in connection with autoimmune diseases, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, long COVID or after infections. The role of still inflammation, which can impair both cognitive and emotional functions, is central to this.
A holistic therapeutic approach aims to identify and treat the cause: sufficient sleep, stress reduction, a low-inflammatory diet, exercise in the fresh air and a targeted supply of micronutrients form the basis. Stabilising the microbiome is also becoming increasingly important, as a disturbed gut can be significantly involved in inflammatory signals in the brain. In this context, lactoferrin has proven to be an interesting active ingredient: It has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects - and can therefore positively influence systemic processes that contribute to brain fog.
Brain fog should be taken seriously, as it is often a warning sign of overload or underlying processes in the body. However, with a targeted, functional approach, mental clarity can often be effectively regained - through a combination of root cause research, lifestyle measures and natural regulators such as lactoferrin.
