Chronic bronchitis is a permanent inflammation of the bronchial tubes with a persistent cough.
According to the definition of the World Health Organisation (WHO), chronic bronchitis is present if coughing and sputum production persist for at least three months per year over two consecutive years. In many cases, this can develop into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in which the airways are permanently narrowed.
The most common cause is long-standing cigarette consumption, which is why the disease is also known as smoker's cough. Other risk factors include air pollution, passive smoking, occupational pollutants such as dust or chemicals and frequent respiratory infections. In contrast to acute bronchitis, which is usually triggered by viruses and heals within a few weeks, chronic bronchitis is a progressive disease.
The symptoms develop gradually. Patients suffer from persistent morning cough with thick sputum, which can be exacerbated by cold air or physical exertion. In advanced stages, difficulty breathing, persistent mucus production, chest pain and increased susceptibility to infection occur. Untreated chronic bronchitis can lead to irreversible damage to the bronchial tubes and impaired lung function.
The treatment aims to alleviate the symptoms, slow down the progression of the disease and maintain lung function. Smoking cessation is the most important step to relieve the bronchial tubes. Medications such as bronchodilators help to widen the airways, while anti-inflammatory corticosteroids can reduce mucosal inflammation. In severe cases, oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation are used to strengthen the respiratory muscles and improve quality of life.
In addition to conventional medical approaches, many healing practitioners and holistic doctors rely on lactoferrin, as it has an anti-inflammatory effect and can regulate the immune system. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids, Antioxidants, Vitamin C, zinc andcurcumin help to regenerate the mucous membranes and reduce susceptibility to infection. Inhalations with essential oils, breathing therapies and a conscious breathing technique can also help to improve lung function.
A healthy, nutrient-rich diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and anti-inflammatory foods as well as avoiding irritating substances such as alcohol and processed foods can support the regeneration of the airways and slow down the progression of chronic bronchitis.
