Brain cells, also known as neurons and glial cells, are the basic units of the human brain and are central to all cognitive, sensory and motor functions.
The brain consists of around 100 billion neurons that communicate with each other via specialised contact points known as synapses. These highly complex networks enable us to process information, store memories and control movements. In addition to neurons, glial cells such as astrocytes, microglia and oligodendrocytes play a supporting role by providing nutrients, removing harmful substances and improving neuron signalling.
The health of brain cells is crucial for mental performance and general well-being. However, factors such as oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, environmental toxins and ageing processes can impair the function and lifespan of brain cells. This can lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or other forms of dementia.
