Rheumatism is a collective term for a variety of diseases that primarily affect joints, muscles, tendons and connective tissue.
The most common form of rheumatism is rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissue. This results in painful inflammation, which can lead to the destruction of joints and restricted mobility in the long term. In addition to rheumatoid arthritis, diseases such as arthrosis, gout, fibromyalgia and systemic lupus erythematosus also belong to the rheumatic group.
Typical signs of rheumatism are joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness and restricted mobility. The finger, hand and knee joints are particularly frequently affected. The symptoms occur in episodes and can be accompanied by general fatigue, fever and weight loss. If left untreated, rheumatism can lead to permanent joint damage, deformations and loss of mobility.
The exact causes of rheumatism are not yet fully understood. However, it is suspected that genetic predisposition, infections and environmental factors play a role. Smoking, chronic stress and an unbalanced diet with lots of pro-inflammatory foods such as sugar, trans fats and highly processed products can also increase the risk or exacerbate the symptoms.
The treatment of rheumatism aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and slow down the progression of the disease. To this end, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cortisone or special immunosuppressants are often used. In addition to drug therapy, physiotherapy, exercise, an adapted diet and targeted nutritional supplements also play an important role.
A targeted diet can influence inflammatory processes and alleviate symptoms. Particularly valuable are omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. from fish, linseed oil or omega-3 capsules), as they have an anti-inflammatory effect. Vitamin D regulates the immune system and supports bone health. A deficiency is often associated with increased inflammatory processes. Curcumin (turmeric), a plant-based active ingredient with strong anti-inflammatory properties, is also frequently used as a natural support for rheumatic diseases. Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants that additionally protect the joints from free radicals. In addition to the right diet, regular exercise, stress management and sufficient sleep are essential to alleviate the symptoms. Moderate sports such as swimming, yoga or strength training that is easy on the joints help to maintain joint mobility.
