Things worth knowing about "Bacillus subtilis"

Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming probiotic with positive effects on gut flora, the immune system and digestion. Learn about its mechanisms of action, applications and safety.

Bacillus subtilis is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium naturally found in soil and plant biomass. Thanks to its heat-stable spores, it survives gastric acid and temporarily colonizes the gut, where it positively influences the microbiome.

Its main effects are based on several mechanisms:

  • Stabilization of the gut microbiome: B. subtilis competes with potential pathogens for nutrients and adhesion sites, strengthens barrier function and supports a balanced microbiota.
  • Immunomodulation: By stimulating secretory IgA production and activating macrophages and dendritic cells, this strain promotes improved defense against infections.
  • Enzyme production and digestive support: Production of proteases, amylases and lipases aids in the breakdown of dietary components and can relieve bloating or discomfort.
  • Toxin-binding properties: In studies, B. subtilis has bound and neutralized toxins from certain pathogens, protecting against diarrheal diseases.

In human and veterinary medicine, B. subtilis is therefore often used in capsules or powders—alone or as an adjunct therapy, for example during antibiotic treatment, to reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Typical applications of Bacillus subtilis:

  • Probiotic supplementation for daily gut health and immune support
  • Adjunct therapy during antibiotic treatment to prevent diarrhea
  • Relief of mild digestive discomfort (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome, bloating)
  • Prevention of traveler’s diarrhea and gastroenteritis
  • Feed additive in animal husbandry to promote growth and feed conversion
