Chlamydia – Symptoms, Risks & Treatment
Learn about chlamydia: common bacterial STI, often symptomless but risky for fertility. Diagnosis via PCR, effective antibiotic treatment.
Things worth knowing about "Chlamydia"
Chlamydia are bacterial pathogens (mainly Chlamydia trachomatis) and among the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide.
Many infections remain asymptomatic at first, which facilitates transmission. If untreated, they can cause inflammation of the urinary and genital tract and lead to fertility issues in the long term.
In women, symptoms may include discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding outside of menstruation, while men may experience painful urination or urethral discharge. If the bacteria spread to the upper genital tract, this can result in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), raising the risk of infertility or ectopic pregnancy. Chlamydia can also infect the throat or rectum.
Diagnosis is made by swab or urine PCR testing. Treatment consists of antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin. To prevent reinfection, it is crucial that sexual partners are also treated. Preventive measures include safer sex practices, regular screenings, and open sexual health communication.
