Eisen(III)-oxid (Fe₂O₃), auch bekannt als Hämatit, ist ein weit verbreitetes Eisenoxid-Mineral, das zur Gruppe der Eisenerze gehört und als eines der wichtigsten Rohmaterialien für die Stahlproduktion dient.
Hämatit kommt in verschiedenen Formen vor, darunter als rotes bis braunes Mineral mit einem metallischen oder erdigen Glanz. Es ist das am häufigsten vorkommende Eisenoxid in der Erdkruste und bildet sich meist unter oxidierenden Bedingungen in magmatischen, sedimentären und metamorphen Gesteinen.
Die chemische Struktur von Hämatit besteht aus Eisen (Fe) und Sauerstoff (O), wobei jedes Eisenatom in einer hochgradig oxidierten Form (Fe³⁺) vorliegt. Hämatit besitzt eine hohe Dichte und ist relativ hart. In der Geologie ist Hämatit von großer Bedeutung, da es in vielen Bändereisenerzen vorkommt, die seit Jahrtausenden als Eisenquelle genutzt werden. Hämatit bildet häufig einfache, kristalline Strukturen, die oft in Form von Platten oder Kristallen auftreten.
Hämatit wird nicht nur zur Eisenproduktion verwendet, sondern findet auch Anwendungen in der Pigmentindustrie (rote Farben), in der Wasseraufbereitung und in der Medizin (z.B in Magnetresonanztomographie-Kontrastmitteln). Darüber hinaus hat Hämatit aufgrund seiner magnetischen Eigenschaften auch biotechnologische Relevanz, beispielsweise in der Magnetorezeption bei Tieren, die das Magnetfeld zur Navigation nutzen.
