Phosphin (PH₃) ist ein farbloses, hochgiftiges Gas aus der Gruppe der Phosphorverbindungen.
Phosphin entsteht sowohl natürlich in sauerstoffarmen, verrottenden organischen Materialien als auch industriell, wo es unter anderem in der Halbleitertechnik und als Begasungsmittel in der Schädlingsbekämpfung eingesetzt wird. Aufgrund seiner chemischen Eigenschaften ist es leicht entzündlich und reagiert empfindlich mit Luft und Feuchtigkeit.
Im menschlichen Körper wirkt Phosphin stark toxisch, da es die Atmungskette in den Mitochondrien hemmt und somit die zelluläre Energiegewinnung blockiert. Bereits geringe Konzentrationen können Symptome wie Kopfschmerzen, Atemnot, Übelkeit, Reizungen der Atemwege oder Herzrhythmusstörungen auslösen. Höhere Dosen führen zu Lungenödemen, Krampfanfällen oder Kreislaufversagen.
Der sichere Umgang mit Phosphin setzt strenge Arbeitsschutzmaßnahmen voraus. In der Landwirtschaft wird es zur Begasung von Getreidelagern genutzt, da es Schädlinge effektiv abtötet, ohne Rückstände im Korn zu hinterlassen. Für Menschen existiert jedoch keine unbedenkliche Expositionsmenge, weshalb Phosphin als Gefahrstoff streng reguliert ist.
