Sorbitol - sugar substitute
Sorbitol is a low-calorie sugar substitute with little effect on blood sugar. In high quantities it can have a laxative effect.
Things worth knowing about "Sorbitol"
Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol (also known as a polyol) that occurs naturally in stone fruit such as apples, pears and plums.
In the food industry, sorbitol is used as a sugar-free or "light" products such as chewing gum, sweets or diet foods.
Sorbitol is also a humectant and stabiliser, which also makes it useful in toothpastes and cosmetics. However, if consumed in excess, sorbitol can have a laxative effect, as it is only partially absorbed in the small intestine and binds water in the large intestine, triggering fermentation processes. People with sorbitol intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome should therefore pay attention to their consumption. In the European Union, sorbitol is authorised under the E number E 420
