What Is Intestinal Villus Activation?
Intestinal villus activation describes the physiological stimulation of the intestinal villi (Villi intestinales) – the tiny, finger-like projections that line the inner wall of the small intestine. These microscopic structures are critical for digestion and nutrient absorption, as they dramatically increase the surface area of the small intestine, enabling maximum uptake of nutrients from food.
Structure and Function of Intestinal Villi
Intestinal villi are small mucosal folds, approximately 0.5 to 1.5 mm in height, that cover the inner lining of the small intestine. Each villus is densely covered with microvilli, collectively forming the brush border. This architecture expands the absorptive surface area of the small intestine to approximately 200 square meters.
- Nutrient absorption: Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are absorbed via the villi.
- Blood and lymph supply: Each villus contains a network of blood capillaries and a central lymph vessel (lacteal), through which absorbed nutrients enter the systemic circulation.
- Immune function: The intestinal mucosa plays a key role in local immune defense.

Villus activation is triggered by various physiological and nutritional stimuli:
Food Intake and Mechanical Stimulation
The mechanical distension of the small intestine caused by food intake activates villus motility. The villi perform rhythmic contractile movements that enhance nutrient absorption and promote lymphatic flow.
Hormonal Regulation
Gut hormones such as cholecystokinin (CCK), secretin, and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) are released during food intake and regulate enzyme secretion, bile production, and villus motility.
Nutritional Factors
Certain nutrients and bioactive compounds can specifically support intestinal villus activation:
- Glutamine: The primary energy source for intestinal cells (enterocytes), promoting villus regeneration.
- Zinc: Essential for cell division and renewal of the intestinal mucosa.
