Things worth knowing about "Autologous Fat Therapy"

Autologous fat therapy is a medical procedure in which the body's own fat tissue is harvested and re-injected to restore volume or treat specific conditions.

What is Autologous Fat Therapy?

Autologous fat therapy – also known as fat grafting, lipofilling, or autologous fat transfer – is a medical and aesthetic procedure in which fat tissue is harvested from one area of the body, processed, and then re-injected into another area. Because the material used comes from the patient's own body, the risk of rejection or allergic reactions is significantly reduced.

Areas of Application

Autologous fat therapy is used across a range of medical and aesthetic fields:

  • Aesthetic surgery: Volume restoration in the face, lips, cheeks, or for breast augmentation and reshaping.
  • Reconstructive surgery: Tissue restoration following tumor removal, trauma, or burns.
  • Joint treatment: Injection of fat tissue or stromal vascular fraction (SVF) into painful joints, for example in cases of osteoarthritis.
  • Wound healing and scar treatment: Improvement of tissue quality and scar texture through the regenerative properties of fat tissue.
  • Hand rejuvenation: Filling the back of the hand to reduce visible signs of aging.

Procedure Overview

1. Fat Harvesting (Liposuction)

Fat tissue is harvested from donor areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips using a gentle liposuction technique. This is typically performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

2. Processing of the Fat

The harvested fat is centrifuged or filtered to remove blood, oil, and excess fluid. The result is a purified fat concentrate ready for injection. In certain applications, the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is isolated, which is rich in stem cells and growth factors.

3. Injection into the Target Area

The processed fat is injected layer by layer into the target tissue using fine cannulas. Precise placement is critical for successful tissue integration and aesthetic outcomes.

Advantages of Autologous Fat Therapy

  • Use of biocompatible, naturally sourced material
  • No risk of allergic reactions or immune rejection
  • Natural appearance and feel
  • Long-lasting results compared to synthetic fillers
  • Simultaneous body contouring through fat removal
  • Regenerative potential due to stem cells and growth factors within the fat

Risks and Side Effects

As with any medical procedure, autologous fat therapy carries certain risks:

  • Resorption: A portion of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by the body, potentially requiring touch-up procedures.
  • Cysts or calcifications: In rare cases, fat cysts or calcifications may develop in the treated area.
  • Infection: As with all surgical procedures, there is a small risk of infection.
  • Asymmetry: Uneven fat integration may lead to asymmetrical results.
  • Fat embolism: In very rare cases, fat can enter the bloodstream, causing a potentially serious fat embolism.

Recovery and Results

Following the procedure, swelling and bruising at both the donor and recipient sites are expected and typically resolve within two to four weeks. Final results are generally visible after three to six months, once the transplanted fat has fully integrated. Studies indicate that between 40 and 80 percent of the transferred fat survives long-term.
