Things worth knowing about "Blood Lancet"

A blood lancet is a small, sterile medical device used to puncture the skin and obtain a few drops of capillary blood, for example for blood glucose testing.

What Is a Blood Lancet?

A blood lancet is a small, sterile, single-use medical instrument designed to puncture the skin in order to collect a tiny amount of capillary blood. It is most commonly used by people with diabetes for daily blood glucose monitoring, but is also widely used in medical diagnostics, point-of-care testing, and pharmacy settings. The puncture created by the lancet is minimal, typically painless, and lasts only a fraction of a second.

Design and Function

Blood lancets consist of a very fine, sterile metal needle encased in a plastic housing. The housing protects against accidental needle injuries. Modern safety lancets feature an automatic needle retraction mechanism that shields the needle immediately after use, significantly reducing the risk of needlestick injuries.

  • Needle gauge: The needle thickness is measured in gauge (G). The higher the gauge number, the finer the needle (e.g., 28G to 33G).
  • Puncture depth: Many lancets offer adjustable puncture depth settings to accommodate different skin thicknesses.
  • Single-use design: Lancets are intended for one-time use only, to minimize infection risk and ensure consistent needle sharpness.

Areas of Application

Blood lancets are used in a variety of medical and diagnostic settings:

  • Blood glucose monitoring: Daily self-monitoring by people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Cholesterol and hemoglobin rapid tests: Point-of-care diagnostics in clinics and pharmacies.
  • Newborn screening: Heel prick tests on newborns to screen for metabolic disorders.
  • Blood type determination: Rapid testing to identify blood group type.

How to Use a Blood Lancet

Correct use of a blood lancet is essential to obtain a sufficient blood sample while minimizing discomfort and risk of injury:

  1. Wash and dry hands thoroughly.
  2. Insert the lancet into a suitable lancing device (autopuncture device).
  3. Set the desired puncture depth.
  4. Disinfect the fingertip (use the side, not the center) and allow it to dry.
  5. Press the device firmly against the skin and release the trigger.
  6. Wipe away the first drop of blood; use the second drop for the test.
  7. Dispose of the used lancet safely in an approved sharps container.

Safety and Hygiene

Since blood lancets come into direct contact with blood, strict hygiene rules apply:

  • Each lancet must only be used once.
  • Never share lancets with other people -- bloodborne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV can be transmitted through contaminated needles.
  • Used lancets are classified as sharps waste and must be disposed of in approved sharps containers.

Availability and Coverage

Blood lancets are available at pharmacies, medical supply stores, and specialist retailers. For people with diabetes mellitus, lancets and lancing devices are typically covered by statutory health insurance in Germany when prescribed by a physician.
