Bromocyclen is a synthetic organic compound used as an insecticide and acaricide. It is applied to combat ectoparasites such as mites and lice in both animals and humans.
Bromocyclen (trade name e.g. Alugan) is a synthetic halogenated organic insecticide and acaricide belonging to the class of organochlorine compounds. It has been used primarily in veterinary medicine and, to a lesser extent, in human medicine for the treatment of ectoparasite infestations. In human medicine, bromocyclen was used mainly for treating scabies (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei) and lice infestations (pediculosis).
Bromocyclen belongs to the class of organic halogen compounds. The active ingredient is lipophilic, meaning it dissolves readily in fats and oils, which promotes its uptake through the body surface of parasites. The substance is a colorless to slightly yellowish solid at room temperature and is poorly soluble in water.
Bromocyclen acts as a neurotoxin targeting arthropods (insects and mites). It inhibits specific enzymatic reactions in the nervous system of parasites, particularly the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, leading to sustained nerve excitation and ultimately the death of the parasite. Because the enzymatic systems of mammals and humans differ structurally from those of arthropods, the selective toxicity toward insects and mites is significantly higher than toward mammals when the product is used as directed.
In human medicine, bromocyclen was typically applied as a solution or emulsion to the affected skin areas. The exact dosage and duration of treatment depended on the indication (scabies or lice infestation) and the age of the patient. Special caution was required in infants and young children, as dermal absorption can be higher in this group. Application was generally performed under medical supervision.
When used correctly, bromocyclen is considered relatively well tolerated in humans. Possible side effects include:
Due to its chemical stability and ecotoxicological properties (environmental persistence, bioaccumulation potential), the use of bromocyclen has been restricted in many countries and largely replaced by more modern, environmentally compatible alternatives.
In Germany and other European countries, bromocyclen has largely been withdrawn from the market. Modern alternatives such as permethrin, ivermectin, and benzyl benzoate have largely replaced bromocyclen in the treatment of scabies and pediculosis. The active ingredient is subject to strict approval regulations and is no longer licensed as a medicinal product in many countries.
