Connective tissue weakness (also called connective tissue laxity or insufficiency) describes a condition in which the connective tissue throughout the body lacks its normal firmness and resilience. Connective tissue is a supportive framework that surrounds and holds together organs, muscles, joints, blood vessels, and the skin. It is composed mainly of collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and a gel-like ground substance. When connective tissue is weak, these structural components are reduced in quality or quantity, making the tissue less able to withstand mechanical stress.
Connective tissue weakness is a common condition that affects women more frequently than men, partly because the female connective tissue has a more loosely woven, net-like fiber structure compared to the denser, parallel arrangement seen in men.
