Contraction Interval: Meaning & Labor Guide
The contraction interval is the time between the start of one contraction and the start of the next. It is a key indicator of labor progress.
Things worth knowing about "Contraction interval"
The contraction interval is the time between the start of one contraction and the start of the next. It is a key indicator of labor progress.
What Is the Contraction Interval?
The contraction interval (also called the contraction spacing or labor interval) refers to the length of time between the beginning of one uterine contraction and the beginning of the next. It is one of the most important measures used by midwives and obstetricians to assess how far labor has progressed. As labor advances, contraction intervals typically become shorter and contractions become longer and more intense.
Contraction Intervals During the Stages of Labor
The pattern of contractions changes significantly throughout labor. Monitoring the contraction interval helps healthcare providers identify which stage of labor a person is in:
- Early labor (latent phase): Contractions occur every 10–20 minutes and last approximately 20–30 seconds.
- Active labor: Contractions come every 3–5 minutes and last around 45–60 seconds.
- Transition and pushing phase: Contractions may come every 2–3 minutes and are very intense and prolonged.
When to Go to the Hospital
A commonly used guideline is the 5-1-1 rule: contractions occurring every 5 minutes, each lasting about 1 minute, for at least 1 hour. When this pattern is established, it is generally recommended to head to the hospital or birthing center.
Regardless of the contraction interval, immediate medical attention should be sought in the following situations:
- Rupture of membranes (waters breaking)
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Significant decrease in fetal movement
- Sudden severe pain without relief between contractions (possible sign of placental abruption)
Braxton Hicks Contractions vs. True Labor Contractions
Not all contractions during pregnancy indicate true labor. Braxton Hicks contractions (also called practice contractions) are irregular, do not follow a consistent pattern, and typically do not intensify over time. True labor contractions, in contrast, become progressively more regular, more frequent, and more intense, with the contraction interval shortening over time.
How to Measure the Contraction Interval
The contraction interval can be measured using a stopwatch or a dedicated contraction timing app. The time is recorded from the start of one contraction to the start of the next. It is equally important to note the duration of each contraction, as both the interval and the duration together provide a full picture of labor progression.
Medical Monitoring of Contraction Intervals
In a clinical setting, contraction intervals are monitored using cardiotocography (CTG). A CTG records both uterine contractions and the fetal heart rate simultaneously. This allows healthcare providers to detect abnormalities such as contractions that are too frequent (hyperstimulation) or too infrequent, and to respond promptly to protect the wellbeing of both mother and baby.
