Things worth knowing about "Cryotherapeutic"

Cryotherapeutic refers to anything related to the use of cold for healing purposes. Cold therapy is used in medicine for pain relief, reducing inflammation, and treating tissue conditions.

What does cryotherapeutic mean?

Cryotherapeutic is an adjective derived from cryotherapy (from Greek kryos = cold and therapeia = treatment). It describes all measures, procedures, or effects based on the targeted application of cold for therapeutic purposes. Cryotherapeutic methods are widely used in conventional medicine, sports medicine, and physiotherapy.

Areas of Application

Cryotherapeutic procedures are used across many medical fields:

  • Dermatology: Removal of warts, skin lesions, or basal cell carcinomas through local freezing (e.g., with liquid nitrogen)
  • Orthopedics and Sports Medicine: Treatment of muscle and joint injuries, reduction of swelling and pain after trauma
  • Rheumatology: Relief of joint inflammation and pain in rheumatic diseases
  • Oncology: Cryoablation of tumors (targeted destruction of tumor tissue through freezing)
  • Gynecology: Treatment of cervical dysplasia or other tissue lesions
  • General Medicine and Wellness: Whole-body cryotherapy chambers for general recovery and wellbeing

Mechanism of Action

The cryotherapeutic effect is based on several physiological mechanisms:

  • Vasoconstriction: Cold causes blood vessels to narrow, reducing swelling and bleeding.
  • Analgesia: Cooling slows nerve conduction velocity, thereby relieving pain.
  • Anti-inflammatory effect: Tissue metabolism is slowed down and pro-inflammatory mediators are reduced.
  • Cell destruction: With local freezing (e.g., using liquid nitrogen at -196 °C), cells are irreversibly damaged and destroyed through ice crystal formation and osmotic stress.

Methods of Cryotherapy

Local Cryotherapy

Cold is applied specifically to a limited area of the body. Common agents include ice packs, cold spray, cooling gels, or liquid nitrogen. This method is frequently used in dermatology and physiotherapy.

Whole-Body Cryotherapy

The entire body is briefly exposed to extreme cold (typically 2–3 minutes at temperatures down to -110 °C) inside a cryotherapy chamber. This method is used for systemic anti-inflammatory effects, pain reduction, and enhanced recovery.

Cryoablation

A minimally invasive procedure in which a cold probe is introduced into tumor tissue to destroy it by freezing. It is used for conditions including prostate cancer, renal cell tumors, and liver tumors.

Safety and Contraindications

Cryotherapeutic applications are generally well tolerated when performed correctly. However, caution is advised in certain situations:

  • Cold intolerance or cold allergy (cold urticaria)
  • Raynaud syndrome or other circulatory disorders
  • Open wounds or skin inflammation in the treatment area
  • Pregnancy (for certain application forms)
  • Heart conditions or high blood pressure (for whole-body cryotherapy)

A medical evaluation should always be carried out before any cryotherapeutic treatment.
