Things worth knowing about "Face mask"
A face mask is a protective covering worn over the mouth and nose to reduce the transmission of pathogens. It is used in medical settings and public environments.
What is a face mask?
A face mask – also referred to as a mouth and nose covering – is a protective device worn over the mouth and nose. Its primary purpose is to reduce the transmission of infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria through respiratory droplets or aerosols. Face masks are used in both clinical and everyday settings.
Types of face masks
Surgical mask
A surgical mask is a disposable three-layer mask designed mainly to protect the environment from droplets and particles expelled by the wearer. It is commonly used in hospitals, operating rooms, and during patient care. Its primary function is source control rather than protecting the wearer.
FFP respirators (Filtering Facepiece Particles)
FFP respirators offer a higher level of protection than surgical masks. They filter aerosols and particles from the inhaled air, thereby also protecting the wearer. Three protection classes exist:
- FFP1: Filters at least 80 % of particles; low protection level.
- FFP2: Filters at least 94 % of particles; widely used in healthcare settings.
- FFP3: Filters at least 99 % of particles; highest protection level, used in highly contagious disease situations.
Community masks (cloth masks)
Community masks or cloth masks are typically made from fabric and offer lower filtration efficiency compared to certified masks. They can reduce the emission of droplets but do not provide reliable protection against aerosols.
When is a face mask used?
Face masks are used in a variety of situations, including:
- In hospitals and medical practices to protect patients and healthcare workers
- During infectious disease outbreaks such as influenza, COVID-19, or tuberculosis
- In public transport and crowded places during epidemics or pandemics
- In industrial and trade environments to protect against dust, chemicals, or pollutants
- By individuals with allergies to reduce exposure to pollen
How does a face mask work?
A face mask works through two mechanisms. First, it reduces the release of droplets and aerosols when talking, coughing, or sneezing (source control). Second, certified masks such as FFP2 or FFP3 filter inhaled particles, providing personal protection for the wearer. Effectiveness depends greatly on correct use: the mask must fit snugly, fully cover the mouth and nose, and be changed regularly.
Correct use of a face mask
- Wash hands thoroughly before putting on the mask
- Position the mask to cover the mouth, nose, and chin
- Do not touch or adjust the mask while wearing it
- Disposable masks should only be used once and then discarded
- Reusable masks should be cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions
- Replace a soiled or damp mask immediately
