Insect spray is an aerosol or pump-spray product designed either to protect humans from insect bites and stings (known as a repellent) or to kill insects in the home and surrounding environment (known as an insecticide). The appropriate product type depends on the intended use and the active ingredients it contains.

Types of Insect Sprays

Repellents (Protective Sprays)

These products are applied to the skin or clothing to deter insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. They do not kill insects but interfere with the insects' sensory perception, causing them to avoid humans. Common active ingredients include:

DEET (diethyltoluamide): Considered one of the most effective insect repellents, providing protection against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects.
Icaridin (picaridin): A well-tolerated alternative to DEET with a broad spectrum of protection.
IR3535: A synthetic ingredient with good skin compatibility, especially suitable for children.
Lemon eucalyptus oil (PMD): A plant-based active ingredient with proven repellent efficacy.

Insecticides (Killing Sprays)

These sprays are used to kill insects directly, for example indoors against mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, or other pests. Common active ingredients include:

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids: Natural or synthetic compounds that attack the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis or death.
Permethrin: Also used to treat clothing and equipment, particularly for travel protection in high-risk areas.

Safety and Application Guidelines

When using insect sprays, the following recommendations should be followed:

Never apply near the eyes, mouth, or open wounds.
For children, choose mild and tested active ingredients (e.g., IR3535, low-concentration icaridin). DEET should not be used on infants and toddlers under 2 years of age.
When using indoors, ensure adequate ventilation.
Wash off skin-applied repellents after returning indoors.
Apply sunscreen before repellent, as some active ingredients may reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen.
Do not apply to damaged or irritated skin.

Possible Side Effects

Most insect sprays are well tolerated when used as directed. However, in rare cases the following reactions may occur:

Skin irritation or allergic reactions at the application site
Eye irritation from accidental contact
If swallowed: nausea and vomiting (contact poison control immediately)
With frequent use of strong active ingredients such as DEET: possible irritation of sensitive skin

Environmental and Health Considerations

Insecticidal sprays may harm beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies in addition to targeted pests. It is therefore advisable to use insecticidal sprays sparingly and in a targeted manner, and to prioritize alternatives such as insect screens or physical protective measures where possible.
