Things worth knowing about "Isopropanol"
Isopropanol is a chemical alcohol widely used as a disinfectant and solvent. It is toxic if ingested, inhaled in large amounts, or absorbed through the skin.
What is Isopropanol?
Isopropanol (also known as isopropyl alcohol or 2-propanol) is a colorless, highly volatile alcohol with a characteristic sharp odor. Its chemical formula is C3H8O. It belongs to the group of secondary alcohols and is fully miscible with water, ethanol, and most organic solvents. Isopropanol is one of the most commonly used alcohols in medicine, industry, and everyday life.
Applications
Isopropanol is used in a wide range of settings:
- Disinfection: At concentrations of 60–80%, isopropanol is an effective antiseptic for skin disinfection and surface sterilization in medical environments.
- Solvent: Used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and the chemical industry as a solvent and cleaning agent.
- Medical wipes and swabs: Isopropanol-based alcohol pads are routinely used to disinfect the skin before injections or blood draws.
- Household and electronics cleaning: Effective at removing grease, oils, and residues from surfaces and electronic components.
Mechanism of Action (Disinfection)
The antimicrobial effect of isopropanol is based on the denaturation of proteins and disruption of the cell membrane of microorganisms. It dissolves lipids from bacterial membranes and inactivates essential enzymes, rapidly killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Notably, pure (100%) isopropanol is less effective than a 70–80% aqueous solution, as water is required to facilitate optimal protein denaturation.
Toxicology and Poisoning Risks
Isopropanol is toxic to humans when ingested, inhaled in significant quantities, or absorbed through damaged skin. It is approximately twice as toxic as ethanol (drinking alcohol).
Routes of Exposure and Symptoms
- Ingestion: Even small amounts can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, central nervous system depression, loss of consciousness, and in severe cases, death.
- Inhalation: High vapor concentrations irritate the airways and can cause headaches, dizziness, and impaired consciousness.
- Skin contact: Repeated exposure defatts and dries out the skin; absorption through damaged skin is possible.
- Eye contact: Can cause irritation and inflammation of the eyes.
Metabolism
In the body, isopropanol is primarily metabolized in the liver to acetone, which is then further broken down or exhaled through the lungs. This explains the characteristic acetone smell on the breath in cases of isopropanol poisoning, distinguishing it from ethanol intoxication.
First Aid and Treatment of Poisoning
If isopropanol poisoning is suspected, emergency services (911 or local emergency number) or a Poison Control Center should be contacted immediately. Treatment is supportive:
- Ingestion: do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical attention.
- Inhalation: move the affected person to fresh air immediately.
- Eye contact: rinse the eye thoroughly with clean water for at least 15 minutes.
- Severe cases: hospitalization, supportive intensive care, and hemodialysis may be required in cases of massive ingestion.
Safety Information
Isopropanol is highly flammable and must be kept away from open flames and heat sources. Products containing isopropanol should always be stored out of reach of children. In occupational settings, appropriate protective measures must be observed, including gloves, safety goggles, and adequate ventilation.
